Lou Loeber

Her vibrant, socially engaged and accessible body of work makes Lou Loeber (1894–1983) an exceptional artist within the realm of Dutch modern art. The Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, which holds her silkscreen print Slapenden (1975) in its collection, is presenting a solo exhibition of her work for the first time in 33 years. Whilst Loeber experimented extensively with abstraction, she never pursued it as strictly as her contemporaries Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. She wanted her art to remain recognisable and accessible to everyone. The exhibition in Schiedam also marks the launch of a programme focusing on female artists working in the abstract from the 1970s, for whom Lou Loeber is a major source of inspiration.
